Introduction to a Pre-Medicine Student

Hello everyone! My name is Charles Nguyen and I'm 20 year old. I was born and raised in San Jose, California but I moved to OKC, Oklahoma after the age of 7. Before even entering college I knew what I wanted study and become in the future and that was a doctor. I've always been fascinated by my science courses in school and coming to college my eyes were set on medical school and eventually becoming a doctor. I have a friend that is older than me and whom I look up to. He's currently a medical student at OSU and I've known him since I was 8 years old. He is the one who continuously makes me want to achieve my goal of becoming a doctor every day.

My hobbies consist of basketball, tennis, piano, dancing, cooking, working out, and the list goes on. I heavily focus on basketball however. I play in a league that consists of 20+ teams and we compete for a trophy every season. I started playing at an age considered "too late", but developed into an exceptional player in my opinion. I play at the Huffman Fitness Center almost ever night with my friends. There were a couple times where I have been injured due to the sport, but most were mainly ankle sprains. I've had pretty bad ankle sprains before to the point where I couldn't walk and needed crutches, but my worst accident on the court was when someone elbowed my bottom jaw and my bottom teeth were basically pushed outwards. It was a very traumatic event because I was rushed to the ER and bleeding profusely. However, to me "ball is life" and I will continue to play the sport no matter the risk.

My favorite movie of all time is The Godfather starting Al Pachino. I have many other movies that I would consider being runner-ups, but nothing can beat a classic like The Godfather. My musicality has a wide range. I love hip hop, r&b, rock, EDM, etc. The only music that I don't listen to is country. When I choreograph to a song I usually have a preference towards r&b, but sometimes I'll steer away and try something new even if it's out of my comfort zone. I have one pet and its a chihuahua puppy named Lucky. He's a VERY ferocious dog towards anyone other than me and my family. This summer I went on MANY vacation to Atlanta, Missouri, Orlando, and finally Destin.

  1. It's great that you have a peer you look up to! It's so important to have something or someone that motivates us, especially when we don't think we can keep going, or need to try harder. That's so funny that your chihuahua is so ferocious! I have a puppy Morkie (maltese Yorkie) who gets scared every time someone touches anyone he believes too aggressively and he tries to protect them! Dogs are so funny :)

  2. That picture of the pills is like some work of abstract art, Charles: very cool! Have you seen the art that people grow in petri dishes? Bacteria art: it is pretty amazing! Scientist paint with bacteria to make art ... and I share your love of that movie: I've lost count of how many times I have watched it! Maybe you will want to tell some crime stories of your own in this class: crime is a big theme throughout the world of mythology and folklore, and you could that Al Pacino inspiration to retell stories of the old outlaws and bandits in Godfather-style!

  3. Hi Charles! It is great to meet another fellow pre-med student. It is amazing that you can manage your time on studying as well as enjoying your hobbies. The Godfather, what a classic! I actually read the books before I start the movie and Marlon Brando is such a great actor. It seems that you have everything plans out for your future and therefore, I wish you the best of luck!

  4. Hi Charles! Your goal of becoming a doctor is very inspiring. I love that you have always wanted to become a doctor and now you're in the process of achieving it. Basketball is one of my favorite sports to watch, but my most favorite to play as well! That's really awesome that you play with such a big league. My dog, Trixie, is very small and ferocious like your dog also. So, I totally understand what you mean about them only being nice to family members!

  5. Hi Charles! It's cool that you are able to spend time doing what you love while working toward your goal of one day being a doctor, and it's great that you have a friend to look up to while you work toward that goal. How'd you learn to start doing choreography? I love when cool choreography videos pop up on my Facebook feed, and I'm always so impressed with people who have that ability. Sounds like you had a fun summer! Destin is one of my family's favorite places to visit.

  6. Hello Charles! It is cool how you are so driven toward your goal of being a doctor. The fact that you have a mentor is good, it often helps to have an example of the future to look forward to. I noticed that you choreograph dances sometimes. What kind of dancing are you into? Is the reason why you don't like country is because it is hard to dance to if it isn't a line dance sort of thing?

  7. Hey Charles! It's great that you want to become a doctor and to help people! I actually have three friends that just started their second year at OSU med in Tulsa and they tell me about their love/hate relationship all the time. I think the hate comes from the lack of sleep from all the studying they do. I love to play basketball too and have had a few injuries myself. Ive broken my thumb three times playing and also a rib. So I get the whole "Ball is life" moto!

  8. Hi Charles!
I’m so happy for you that you are confident in your future. College is a time of uncertainty for people, especially when concerning a career and major. You have one less thing to worry about. You seem to have a lot of hobbies, which I think is great. Having things to keep you happy and busy are important. I also have a ferocious chihuahua! The picture of Destin you included is beautiful. I’m a huge fan of Florida vacations, but haven’t been to Destin yet. It’s on my list!

  9. Hi Charles! Good to see another Bay Area person here (go Warriors) haha. It is good you are chasing your dream and have someone to push you to get there. That is a major part is having a support network, doesn't always have to be people to help you with issues but also people who encourage you. I feel the same about country music, hard to dodge it here in Oklahoma. I was born and raised in Oakland and moved here when I was 17.

  10. "Ball is life" hahaha I love it! Nice to meet you Charles! I'm glad that you love playing basketball so much that's awesome! I can't relate to that at all because I am horrifyingly un-athletic but good for you! It's also really cool that you are so confident in what you want to - medicine is an incredible profession so I'm sending you major happy thoughts on that one! Have a great day!

  12. Hi! I love that you are from California I have a lot of family members there. Props to you for wanting to go into the medical field I do not think I could handle all of the pressure that comes with it. I think it is really cool you are still so passionate about playing basketball even in college. Good luck with the semester!

  13. Hi Charles!

California is beautiful! My dad's side of the family lived out there and then moved to texas when he was pretty young. Now my aunt and her family live out there again!
I think it's so cool that you want to become a doctor! And the fact that your friend is who inspires you is just awesome!
Basketball is not my sport of choice though I respect it greatly becasue my little brother is really good at it and would gladely play you if given the chance! That sucks about all your injuries from playing. I personally cannot relate as I've never been seriously injured whilst playing sports (I played competitive, tournament softball for most of my life).
I hope you really enjoyed visiting Destin! My family goes every Thanksgiving! We camp at Henderson National Park and it's beautiful out there!
It was so nice to meet you!

  14. Hi Charles!
I really like the design and layout of your blog! I also like how you incorporated the numerous pictures that represented some of the key aspects of your introduction. I am also a pre medicine student and I can totally relate to your passion of science courses. I hope you are having a good semester so far and I cant wait to explore the rest of your blog!

  15. Ah, the ball is life outlook. I have a friend who lives by that motto, and he ended up with a broken arm and hand during the hardest semester of Computer Engineering. You know what he had to do? He had to drop out of CE and go to Computer Science. So sad for him. You went to many vacations huh? Lucky you.

  16. Nice to meet you Charles! It's always nice to have a mentor or someone you look up to for advice and direction. I want to be a dentist and know how important it is to learn from and be pushed by someone older. Good luck with your medical career! It's so cool you got to travel to so many places this summer. I recently went to Chicago with my family and it was the best!

  17. • Hey Charles, It is great that you are so focused on becoming a doctor. It takes a lot of dedication to get through all of those classes. It also makes a good doctor when they have such a passion for the profession from the start. I had a friend who has a pet Chihuahua and know that particular breed of dog really only enjoys their own family and usually has a favorite family member. (Hopefully that is you) Good luck in the class and getting into medical school.

  18. Hi Charles! I think it is awesome that you want to be a doctor and are so determined to achieve that goal. I wish you the best of luck in your future academic endeavors. Although it seems like you are more passionate about basketball than I am, I still enjoy going to the Huff for a couple of hours and playing.

  19. Hi Charles! First off, it's awesome that you knew what you wanted to do for a long time. And even better that you have a friend who you look up to as a mentor. I am sure he's able to help you get through this process of getting to med school! It seems like you had a pretty fun summer getting to travel to all those places! Super jealous. I was home all summer. Will you be taking the MCAT soon? I heard registration opened up recently. I am sure you'll kill that. Well, best of luck with your future and the rest of this semester! Nice to meet you.

  21. Charles, you definitely seem like such an outgoing person! It is cool that you have known that you want to become a doctor for a long time and that you have known an OSU professor since you were eight years old. Although I do not know anything about sports, I always admire when someone is athletic! Also, what kind of dance do you do, or is it a variety. I also really love piano and think it is great when parents put their kids in music lessons at a young age. I am glad that I have finally come across your introduction! I am looking forward to reading some of your stories.

  23. Hey Charles,
It's nice meeting you although it is fairly late in the semester! I think that it is great that you want to become a doctor! It's crazy that you already knew what you wanted to do before you got to college. I'm a Junior this year and I've decided on being a Comm Major because I enjoy the classes, but I still do not know what I want to do after college. You are a very active person too especially if you're at the Huff ballin' everyday! Again, Great getting to know a little about you, maybe I'll see you at the Huff one of these days!

It’s so great that you know exactly what you want to do, and have for so long. Not many people are that lucky, myself included haha. I’m glad you are so passionate about basketball! That’s awesome! I’m excited to read some of your stories and other blog posts that you’ve written up to this point in the semester!

  26. Hello Charles !
Power to you for being a Pre-Medicine student. I am a Pre-Pharmacy Student and I know how difficult that can be! I also like to play basketball at the HUFF. I wonder if we have played each other. I often shoot against people and don't get their names. I wouldn't be surprised if I beat you! LOL! Jk! Anyways, Goodluck with finals !
